En ocasiones excepcionales
En ocasiones excepcionales
la fuerza me ha permitido
enviar ondas de emoción
a través del mundo.
Estos fueron acontecimientos impersonales,
sobre los cuales no tenía control.
Subí al escenario al aire libre
mientras el sol se ocultaba
tras la Torre de Toledo
y la gente no me dejó irme
hasta la mitad de la noche.
Todos nosotros,
los músicos, el público,
nos disolvimos en gratitud.
No había nada
excepto la oscuridad estrellada,
el aroma del heno recién cortado
y una mano de viento que acariciaba
cada una de nuestras frentes.
Ni siquiera recuerdo la música.
Un susurro profundo y uniforme se elevó
sin que yo lo comprendiera.
Cuando dejé el escenario
le pregunté al promotor
qué era lo que decían.
Dijo que estaban cantando:
to-re-ro, to-re-ro.
Una joven me llevó de vuelta al hotel,
una flor de la especie.
Todas las ventanas se cerraron.
Fue un viaje libre de errores.
No pude sentir el camino
ni reconocí la geografía del lugar.
No hablamos
y no me hizo preguntas
cuando llegamos al vestíbulo
o cuando subimos a la habitación.
Solo muy recientemente
recordé ese viaje de hace tanto,
y desde entonces
he necesitado sentirme liviano
pero jamás lo estoy.
On Rare Occasions (p. 13)
On rare occasions
the power was given me
to send waves of emotion
trough the world.
These were impersonal events,
over wich I had no control.
I climbed on the outdoor stage
as the sun was going down
behind the Tower of Toledo
and the people did not let me go
until the middle of the night.
All of us,
the musicians, the audience,
were disolved in gratitude.
There was nothing but
the starry darkness,
the smell of fresh cut hay,
and a hand of wind caressing
every single forehead.
I don`t even remember the music.
A wide unison whispering arose
wich I didn`t understand.
When I left the stage
I asked the promoter
what they were saying.
He said they were chanting:
to-re-ro, to-re-ro.
A young woman drove me back to the hotel,
a flower of the race.
All the windows were rolled down.
It was a ride free from error.
I could not feel the road
or the pull of destinantion.
We didn`t speak
and there was no question of her
entering the lobby,
or climbing to my room.
Only recently
I remembered that drive long ago,
and since then,
I need to be weigthless
But I never am.
Dijo Roshi
1
Dijo Roshi:
Jikan san, hay algo que quiero que
sepás
sí, Roshi
sos el peor estudiante que he tenido
2.
Desaparecí por diez años.
Cuando regresé a Los Angeles
Roshi me invitó a cenar.
Después de la cena quiso verme
a solas.
Dijo Roshi:
Cuando te fuiste parte de mí murió.
Yo le contesté:
No te creo.
Dijo Roshi:
Buena respuesta.
3.
Durante el escándalo sexual de Roshi (tenía 105 años),
mi relación con él
fue mencionada a menudo
en los periódicos.
Dijo Roshi:
Te causo muchos problemas.
Le dije:
Sí, Roshi, me causás
muchos problemas.
Dijo Roshi:
Debería morirme.
Le dije:
No ayudaría.
Roshi no se rio.
Roshi Said (p. 21)
1.
Roshi said:
Jikan san, there`s something I want yo to
know
yes, Roshi
you are the worst student I`ve ever had
2.
I disappeared for ten years.
When I came back to Los Angeles
Roshi invited me for dinner.
After dinner Roshi wanted to see me
alone.
Roshi said:
When tou left half of me died.
I said:
I don`t believe you.
Roshi said:
Good answer.
3.
During Roshi`s sex scandal (he was 105)
my association with Roshi
was often mentioned in the newspaper
reports.
Roshi said:
I give you lots of trouble.
I said:
Yes, Roshi, you give me
lots of trouble.
Roshi dijo:
I should die.
I said:
It won`t help.
Roshi didn`t laugh.
Trabajo de tiempo completo
Para V.R. (1978-2000)
Vanessa llamó
desde Toronto.
Me dijo que podía
contar con ella
si alguna vez me sentía mal.
Después de colgar el teléfono
toqué la flauta de madera
que me regaló
cuando nos separamos.
Descifré las notas
y toqué mejor
que nunca.
Se me salieron las lágrimas
por el sonido,
y por el recuerdo
de su extraordinaria belleza,
que nadie podía evitar,
y porque ella me dijo
que una canción se había perdido
y que yo había sido escogido,
de entre todos los desempleados,
que yo había sido escogido
para recobrarla.
Te veo en las ventanas
que se abren tan anchas
que no hay nada más allá,
y nada dentro.
Te quitaste tus sandalias,
te alborotaste el pelo,
tu belleza disuelta
y mostrada por doquier.
La historia se ha escrito.
La carta, sellado.
Me diste una azucena,
pero ahora es un prado.
Full Employement (p. 27)
For V.R. (1978-2000)
Vanessa called
all the way from Toronto.
She said that
I could count on her
if ever I was down and out.
After I hung up the phone
I played
the six-holed wooden flute
she gave me
on the occasion of our parting.
I figured out the fingering
and I played it better
than I had ever done.
Tears came out of my eyes
because of the sound,
and the recollection
of her extraordinary beauty
which no one could avoid,
and because she said
a song had gone missing,
and I had been selected,
out of all the unemployed,
I had been selected to recover it.
I see you in windows
that open so wide
there’s nothing beyond them,
and nothing inside.
You take off your sandals
you shake out your hair,
your beauty dismantled
and worn everywhere.
The story’s been written.
The letter’s been sealed.
You gave me a lily,
but now it’s a field.
